Dental Technology

Dental Technology

Dental technology includes a number of cutting-edge tools, equipment, techniques and materials we use at our office to ensure you receive high-quality, gentle care. Our dentist and team have received the necessary training to utilize advanced dental technology to enhance your oral health.

We strive to use advanced dental technology to make your experience as efficient, comfortable and enjoyable as possible. For example, our diagnostic equipment aids us in making quick, accurate diagnoses and helps us effectively plan your treatment. We strive to utilize the latest, most advanced technology available to provide you with the best possible experience and care every time you visit our office. Each of our different types of dental technology has its own benefits.

Dental Technology Includes:

CariVu Cavity Detection

This advanced diagnostic technology enables our team to detect tooth decay in its earliest stages—often before traditional methods can find it. At Rappaport Dental, Dr. Drew Rappaport uses this state-of-the-art caries detection system to deliver proactive, preventive care that helps patients avoid costly treatments and maintain lasting oral health.

Early detection is key to preserving natural teeth and preventing extensive procedures. Since decay often develops in hidden areas, waiting until it becomes visible or painful can lead to more serious damage.

By integrating cutting-edge technology like CariVu’s patented transillumination imaging, we provide Jacksonville patients with the most accurate diagnostics available. This innovation allows us to spot early decay, protect healthy tooth structure, and plan treatments that ensure long-term oral wellness.

CEREC Same-Day Restorations

If you have had a crown or veneer in the past, chances are good that you had to wear a temporary restoration for a week or longer while your permanent one was made in a dental lab. At our office, our dentist and team have made that a thing of the past. Our team uses our CEREC machine in Jacksonville, FL, to create your new, permanent restoration in one visit to our office.

Our dentist and team work hard to stay current on the latest advances in dental technology and techniques. We utilize state-of-the-art dental equipment, including CEREC one-visit restoration technology, to help us provide you with the best possible dental care and experience. CEREC technology allows our team to provide you with a custom-made, high-quality dental restoration in a single visit to our office. Traditional dental techniques require at least two visits to complete many dental restorations; CEREC technology saves you time and discomfort by eliminating the need for a second visit. With CEREC technology, we can create many types of dental restorations in just one visit, including:

  • Dental crowns

  • Dental veneers

  • Dental inlays and onlays

Cone Beam Scanner

Our office features a cone beam scanner in Jacksonville, FL. Our dentist can use this technology to get a detailed view of not just your smile but the surrounding areas in order to diagnose a problem and plan your treatment. This scanner is particularly useful during sleep apnea treatments, since it can give us a detailed view of your head, neck, and airway. To put this technology to work for you, call our office at 904-620-9225 to schedule your appointment.

At our office, we are committed to utilizing advanced dental technology to always provide you with the highest level of dental care. We are proud to utilize cone beam 3D imaging technology at our practice. Cone beam 3D technology is an imaging system that provides our dentist and team with a three-dimensional image reconstruction of your teeth, mouth, jaw, neck, ears, nose, and throat. We may use dental cone beam 3D imaging to:

  • Plan dental implant placement

  • Evaluate the jaws and face

  • View the head and neck as a comprehensive whole

  • Diagnose tooth decay (cavities) and other dental problems

  • Detect endodontic problems and plan root canal therapy

  • Analyze dental and facial trauma

  • Plan and evaluate the progress of orthodontic treatment

  • Visualize abnormal teeth

  • Assess a TMJ disorder

Digital X-rays

X-rays have been a standard part of dental visits for many years. At our office, our dentist and team use digital X-rays in Jacksonville, FL, to examine your smile. These X-ray are comfortable, and they are safe for you and the environment.

Digital X-rays are one of the advanced dental technology tools we use to provide you with the best possible care. Digital radiography has changed the way we take dental X-rays by making the process faster, more comfortable and more convenient than ever before. Digital X-rays use a digital sensor to take images of your teeth, unlike traditional X-rays that use film. Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than conventional film X-rays and require the use of no chemicals for developing the images. Our dentist can then instantly view the high-quality images on monitors right in the treatment room to provide you with efficient, accurate diagnoses and care. Our team is able to use digital radiography to identify and diagnose several types of dental problems, such as:

  • Decay in between teeth

  • Developmental abnormalities

  • Improper tooth root positioning

  • Cysts and abscesses

  • Fractures in existing fillings

  • Tumors

  • Infection in the tooth nerves

  • Bone loss

Intraoral Camera

Not every part of your smile is easy to see during an examination. Nevertheless, our dentist will need to see your entire mouth to look for problems and create your personalized treatment plan. We use an intraoral camera in Jacksonville, FL, to provide you with a comprehensive dental exam and allow you to see firsthand what your smile needs may be. To see our intraoral camera in action, call 904-620-9225 for your appointment.

An intraoral camera is a dental technology tool we use to get a closer look at different parts of your smile. The intraoral camera is a small, pen-shaped device that we can use to take high-quality color photos of your teeth and gums, as well as other areas of your mouth as needed. Because the intraoral camera is so small and easily maneuverable, we can use it to see angles in your mouth that we cannot easily view with the unaided eye. We may utilize the intraoral camera to better evaluate your oral health and diagnose dental problems like tooth decay and periodontal disease, as well as tooth damage like a cracked or chipped tooth. The intraoral camera is also useful in following up after a treatment has been completed.

In addition to helping our team get a better view of your smile, the images taken with the intraoral camera allow you, our patient, to gain a better understanding of your oral health and dental treatments. We can also send these photos to other dentists and specialists and can submit them to dental insurance companies as needed. To learn more about the uses and benefits of intraoral cameras, we invite you to call or visit our dentist and team soon.

iTero Digital Scanner

Our office uses iTero® digital scanning to view three-dimensional images of the inside of your mouth. iTero digital imaging is a state-of-the-art technology that captures high-quality images of your teeth and supporting structures, making it easy for our dentist and team to diagnose problems and provide effective treatments. The iTero scanner captures up to 20 images per second in full color, allowing us to easily distinguish between healthy and diseased tissue, build accurate digital models of your mouth, and create appliances and restorations that fit and function better. iTero technology can even simulate your treatment outcome to show you what your end result should look like!

When our dentist or hygiene team scans your mouth, a small wand will be used to quickly and comfortably scan the inside of your mouth. As the wand passes over your teeth, the images captured will be processed simultaneously to provide an immediate, complete, and highly accurate image of your mouth. The pictures are even saved automatically every few seconds, so there is no need for you to sit through a second scan.

Panoramic X-Rays

One of the state-of-the-art tools we use to do that is panoramic X-rays. While standard X-rays, called bitewing X-rays, provide us with a view of a few teeth and the supporting bone structure, panoramic X-rays allow us to view the full upper and lower dental arches — including all of the teeth, the upper and lower jawbones, and the surrounding facial structures. Using panoramic X-rays, our oral health professionals can:

Using dental technology like a panoramic X-ray machine is fast and comfortable. The machine simply rotates around your head and provides our dentist with high-definition, nearly instantaneous images that we can then use to evaluate your oral health. Oral cancer can be deadly if it is not caught in time. However, it can be extremely difficult to detect in its early stages, and the symptoms can be very similar to other oral and general health problems. When you visit our dentist and team for your routine dental appointment, we will perform an oral cancer screening. At the office of Dr. Drew Rappaport, we utilize the VELscope® oral cancer screening system to examine the soft tissues of your mouth and look for any areas of concern.

The VELscope® system uses a specialized blue spectrum light that can locate potential problem areas. The light causes abnormalities to fluoresce in different colors across your gums and cheeks, the floor and roof of your mouth, and the upper area of your throat. This will help Dr. Rappaport locate problems that might otherwise be overlooked during a regular screening. The process is comfortable and non-invasive and can be completed in three minutes.
